United Way Community Transformation Grant
Great job to Courtney Stone, Dom Stewart (12th), Ramil Beers (11th), and Nox Allen (10th) who spoke at United Way’s Community Breakfast in Eugene on Thursday September 12th. This group stole the show sharing about garden and project based learning developments and student leadership within the community.

Gardening teacher Tucker Ford, Board member Maree Beers, and our Mapleton campus are spotlighted in this year’s United Way fundraising video that can be seen here. We are very grateful for United Way’s Community Transformation grant which provides capacity for these endeavors.

Following their speech, a number of funders reached out to support garden greenhouse expansion!

Academic updates
We remain focused on increasing literacy rates - listening, speaking, reading, and writing - at all grade levels. All staff are supporting students to write complete sentences with proper capitalization and end marks, expanding sentences to include what, where, and when information, and writing compound and complex sentences by connecting clauses with words like because, but, and so.

Elementary classes all engage in one hour a day with texts and writing connected to their module theme and an additional hour of foundational skills (K-2) and literacy and language support (3-6).

At high school, we have added dual credit options where students can earn college credit with LCC. Courses include Writing 121Z, Precalculus 111, and Political Science 201. Additionally, we were approved for all Juniors/Seniors to take a free LCC course (in person or online) at anytime during the school year.

Extracurricular activities
Check out our new pollinator garden on the elementary campus, great job to summer school students and staff for their hard work! We had a blast learning about pollinators, native plants, and studying the history and culture of Oregon's Tribal Nations.

Our elementary afterschool and Friday school program for 2nd-6th graders is up and running. Daily activities include outdoor play, free dinner, academic support time, and STEM and Arts programming. Transportation is provided. This program is funded by federal grants and is provided in partnership with Boys and Girls Club of Western Lane County.

If you are intersted in signing your student up to attend, please contact Carly in the elementary office.

National Suicide Prevention Week
Today brings the end of National Suicide Prevention Week. Mapleton is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment and providing students, families, and communities services that promote mental health wellness. Our Suicide Prevention, Intervention, and Postvention plan and resources is found here.

A Training Opportunity for ALL Community
We invite all adult community members to register for ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), a free two day workshop to learn how to provide suicide intervention. This will take place October 10-11 at Mapleton Lion's Club from 8am-4pm each day, lunches provided. We hope you are able to join us for this training!

Health and Safety Updates
We have updated and reviewed safety and emergency practices and will be hosting drills this week. We use ParentSquare to communicate during any emergencies and will send out test communication on Tuesday morning. If you do not receive this alert, please contact the school office to update your phone and email information.

A quick reminder of the importance of regular attendance - 90+% attendance means no more than one absence every three weeks. That said, please help us keep our community healthy by keeping your student home if they have a fever or vomiting/diarrhea. They should only return to school when they are symptom free for 24 hours.

If you are experiencing barriers to regular attendance or need support with food, clothing, housing, counseling, or other resources, we have many partnerships that can help. Please contact our new Community Coordinator, Rosie Golden at rgolden@mapleton.k12.or.us or call the front office.

Mental Health Resources
Beginning this week, HOOTS will be hosting two clinics each week (Tues & Wed) for MS/HS students. Clinics are always free, confidential, voluntary, and available to all students. Clinic teams include a crisis worker and an EMT or RN, services are HIPAA compliant, and HOOTS can provide short term counseling, crisis intervention, basic first aid and community referrals.

HOOTS guiding values include harm reduction, anti-oppression, and youth-empowerment. At the clinics, youth can meet with a professionally trained crisis counselor, an EMT or RN to discuss their needs and options. Our team is there to provide extra support to students on a range of topics such as: mental health, physical health, accessing resources, school life, home life, interpersonal relationships, family relationships, substance use or abuse and more. The clinic can also connect students to ongoing resources such as assistance finding long term counseling and getting them signed up for OHP.

We are also expanding our partnership with Peace Health and will share more details soon!
