Homecoming Alumni Celebration
|
Thank you to all alumni, staff, community, and students who participated in this year's Homecoming celebrations. We started the evening with a spirited volleyball contest between team "Old Blue" and our Mapleton volleyball team. Each game was competitive, with 10 former players (Coaches Molly Dooley, Kiana Moody, and Briena Jensen, staff members Kale'a Galbreath-Ford, Shawn Walker, Kelsi Allen, and Carly Duval, Board member Mizu Burruss, and parents Danell Sundstrom and Andrea Still) showing off their athletic prowess and competitive spirit; however, the students took the win 3 games to 1. Their record is now 7-9 and they have upcoming home games on Tues Oct 8th and Mon Oct 14th.

Competitions continued with our second annual flag football competition. The "Young Sailors" held a lead for most of the first half; however, the alumni team scored a touchdown and conversion to take the lead and never looked back. The students were led by Ramil Beers and Dom Stewart, with two touchdowns each. A number of middle school players earned significant playing time. Thank you to Coaches Zac Burtt for running the sideline crew and Justin Gaston for leading the umpire crew. Staff members Tucker Ford, Lou Burruss, Kelsie Allen, Carly Duval, alumni Caleb Lewis, Jeffrey Bernhardt, Mason Flansberg and parents Kaleb Kallas, Casey Duval, and Tim Moffitt out battled the students to a 32-24 win. We are grateful for all who came to support our Homecoming sports events.

Homecoming Court and Dance
|
Thank you to Courtney Stone and Student Government for recognizing our Homecoming Court and planning our Homecoming Dance. The large tent on the lower field provided a great space for dancing and celebrating. The Rhody Cruisers Car Club of Florence once again provided a special opportunity for our Homecoming Court - King-Dom Stewart, Queen-Morgan Milbrett, Juniors Jacob Burchell and Jostin Harrington, Sophomores - Hunter Bernhardt and Abi Galvan Mendez, and Freshmen - Aiden Tuttle and Annalee Duval.

Regular attendance means attending school 90+% of more, which means no more than one absence every three weeks. We are excited to report that after the first three weeks, 88% of 7-12 graders and 86% of K-6 students have met this goal! Our district goal is 82+% per year! Thank you for your support of our attendance goals!
Students in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades are piloting a new math curriculum this year, Illustrative Mathematics. We will be collecting data from students, staff, and families throughout the year as we choose our future math curriculum. Similarly, High School Biology is piloting OpenSciEd Biology. If you have questions or input about any of these instructional resources, please reach out.

National Hispanic Heritage Month
|
National Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 - October 15, recognizes the achievements and contributions of Hispanic Americans who have inspired others to achieve success. It first started as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and expanded to a full month by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. The dates were chosen because September 15 is the anniversary of independence for the Latin American countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.

HOOTS Clinics
A reminder that HOOTS is hosting two clinics each week (Tues & Wed) for MS/HS students. Clinics are always free, confidential, voluntary, and available to all students. Clinic teams include a crisis worker and an EMT or RN, services are HIPAA compliant, and HOOTS can provide short term counseling, crisis intervention, basic first aid and community referrals. At the clinics, youth can meet with a professionally trained crisis counselor, an EMT or RN to discuss their needs and options. The team is there to provide extra support to students on a range of topics such as: mental health, physical health, accessing resources, school life, home life, interpersonal relationships, family relationships, substance use or abuse and more. The clinic can also connect students to ongoing resources such as assistance finding long term counseling and getting them signed up for OHP.
